a creative practice doesn't always fit neatly into categories
Sonia Boué is an artist whose multiform practice spans visual art, writing, research, advocacy and mentoring. Her website rebuild was conceived as a practice reboot: an opportunity to reconsider how a substantial, interconnected body of work could be organised, explored and understood.
making room for discovery
The central challenge was to organise Sonia's work without imposing categories that obscured the connections between projects. Working collaboratively, we developed a single, filterable portfolio that allows visitors to browse the full breadth of her practice or explore particular themes.
The solution was as much editorial as structural. Related works were brought together within individual project pages, while filters and cross-links offered different routes through the practice. The result is a flexible structure that can accommodate new work without needing to be reorganised.
accessibility informs every design decision
As a neurodivergent and disabled artist, Sonia wanted accessibility to be primary in the design. Filters sit above the project index, titles remain visible rather than appearing on hover, and each project page follows a consistent opening structure before adapting to the individual work.
Text widths were constrained to keep lines manageable, and colour combinations were checked for sufficient contrast. Teal and chartreuse accents drawn from Sonia's Neurophototherapy work give the site its distinctive character while working within those accessibility requirements.
Typography connects the design to Sonia's practice in another way. Sabon, a classic book typeface designed by Jan Tschichold, was chosen for its literary character and suitability for extended reading. Tschichold's experience of exile offers a quiet resonance with the themes of displacement running through Sonia's work.
an evolving digital home
The result is a confident, accessible digital home that brings Sonia's artwork, writing, mentoring and advocacy together. Sonia can manage updates independently, adding new projects and themes as her practice evolves.
Hanna was recommended to me for her expertise in accessible website design. As a neurodivergent disabled artist, I was immediately impressed by her approach. Hanna also combines absolute professionalism with a warm and collaborative approach, providing knowledge and insights that have helped me reconsider my practice at an important, delicate moment of renewal in my career. I have found this process deeply rewarding, and I am delighted with the quality of my new website, which I feel represents me perfectly. Hanna has an innate understanding of creative practice and works holistically to arrive at elegant solutions to practical problems. I now have a website I'm proud of, and Hanna is a delight to work with.
